Before the Internet, local businesses could effectively market their business by ensuring they were listed in the yellow pages, placing an ad in a local newspaper and sending out direct mail flyers. Today the effectiveness of these mediums is declining.
And having a website isn’t enough. Is the information current? How will people find your website? How will you drive traffic to it?
What is Local Search?
Local search is a new opportunity to help local people find your business.
On October 27, 2010, Google introduced “Place Search”, a new kind of local search that organizes the world’s information around places. Google CEO Schmidt states, “We’ve clustered search results around specific locations so you can more easily make comparisons and decide where to go.” A search in Google using “Place Search” results in a Google maps listing filtered by local search results and ranks these place pages in its search engine results.
The search can be done on a computer. But increasingly these searches are being done on smart phones – a type of mobile phone .
Businesses can benefit by ensuring they can be found in a local search.
By optimizing your business location for local search, consumers can find you when they need your service. For instance, if someone is looking for a coffee shop on their mobile phone, your company (if it is a coffee shop) will appear as one that is close to their current location. And ensuring that you have reviews tells those consumers that your business would be a better choice in comparison to your competitors.
